Why color mixing?
Color mixing is one of the easiest ways to combine art and science. Kids see cause and effect instantly — pour blue into yellow and green appears. Along the way they learn the primary colors (red, yellow, blue), how secondary colors are made, and a little bit about light, pigment, and capillary action. Try the experiments in order, or jump to whichever sounds fun.
The Walking Water Experiment
Supplies
- 6 clear cups or glasses
- Paper towels (cut into long strips)
- Water
- Red, yellow, and blue food coloring
The science
Water climbs the paper towel through capillary action — tiny fibers pull the water up against gravity. When two colors meet in an empty cup, they mix into a secondary color.
Steps
- Line up 6 cups in a row. Fill cups 1, 3, and 5 about ¾ full with water. Leave cups 2, 4, and 6 empty.
- Add 5–6 drops of red to cup 1, yellow to cup 3, and blue to cup 5.
- Fold a paper towel strip lengthwise and drape one end into a colored cup and the other end into the empty cup next to it. Connect all 6 cups this way (the last strip goes from cup 6 back to cup 1).
- Wait 30–60 minutes. Watch as the water "walks" up the paper towels and the empty cups fill with new colors — orange, green, and purple!
Make Your Own Color Wheel
Supplies
- White paper or paper plate
- Washable paint or markers in red, yellow, and blue
- Paintbrush or cotton swabs
- Pencil
The science
Primaries can't be made by mixing other colors. Secondaries (orange, green, purple) come from mixing two primaries. Opposite colors on the wheel pop visually when placed next to each other — artists call this contrast.
Steps
- Draw a circle on the paper and divide it into 6 equal slices (like a pizza).
- Paint red, yellow, and blue in alternating slices — leave a blank slice between each one.
- In the slice between red and yellow, mix a little red and yellow paint to make orange. Paint it in.
- In the slice between yellow and blue, mix them to make green.
- In the slice between blue and red, mix them to make purple.
- You've built a color wheel! The primaries (red, yellow, blue) are across from their opposite — the "complementary" color.
The Primary Mixing Chart
Supplies
- White paper
- Red, yellow, and blue paint or food coloring
- Small cups or a paint palette
- Brush or eyedropper
The science
The ratio of pigments changes the result. A little red in yellow gives peach; a lot of red gives a deep orange. Artists use this to mix every color from just three tubes of paint.
Steps
- Draw a 3×3 grid on white paper. Label the top row and left column: Red, Yellow, Blue.
- In each cell, mix the row color with the column color — for example, the Red row + Yellow column cell gets red and yellow mixed together.
- Notice that the diagonal (Red+Red, Yellow+Yellow, Blue+Blue) stays the same color, just stronger.
- Try changing the ratio: one drop red + three drops yellow makes a different orange than three red + one yellow. Make a second chart with different ratios.
Milk + Soap Color Explosion
Supplies
- Shallow dish or plate with a rim
- Whole milk (enough to cover the bottom)
- 4 colors of food coloring
- Dish soap
- Cotton swab
The science
Milk contains fat. Soap molecules break the surface tension and chase the fat around, dragging the food coloring with them — so the colors race and mix in real time.
Steps
- Pour milk into the dish until the bottom is fully covered.
- Carefully add a drop of each food coloring in the center, close together but not touching.
- Dip a cotton swab in dish soap, then gently touch it to the center of the milk where the colors are.
- Watch the colors burst outward and swirl into new colors!
Coffee Filter Tie-Dye
Supplies
- White coffee filters
- Washable markers in many colors
- Spray bottle with water
- Tray or plate
The science
Marker ink is made of many pigments. Water carries them across the filter at different speeds (this is called chromatography), and where two colors meet you get a new one.
Steps
- Lay a coffee filter flat on a tray. Use markers to draw bold dots, lines, and shapes — pack them close together.
- Lightly spray the filter with water (don't soak it).
- Watch the marker ink spread and blend into new colors and patterns.
- Let the filter dry, then fold or twist into flowers, butterflies, or art.
