Drawing with Lines
🎒 What you need:
Lines are the foundation of all drawing!
Every drawing starts with a line. Lines can be straight, curvy, zigzag, thick, thin, bold, or gentle. Before you draw a face, a house, or a tree — you draw lines. Today you will discover how powerful a single line can be.
Types of Lines
Here are the main types of lines every artist uses:
- Straight lines — strong, structured, architectural
- Curved lines — soft, flowing, natural (like waves or petals)
- Zigzag lines — energetic, sharp, exciting
- Spiral lines — hypnotic, growing, dynamic
- Thick lines — bold, important, dominant
- Thin lines — delicate, detailed, subtle
What Lines Can Express
Lines don't just describe shapes — they carry emotion! A jagged zigzag feels anxious and dangerous. A gentle curve feels calm and friendly. Horizontal lines feel peaceful and restful. Diagonal lines feel active and exciting.
✏️ Activity: Line Emotions
Grab a pencil and paper. Fill a page with different types of lines — make them fast, slow, wobbly, sharp, sweeping. Don't try to draw anything — just play with lines for 2 minutes.
- Draw 10 straight lines of different lengths
- Draw 5 big swooping curves
- Draw a zigzag that goes all the way across the paper
- Draw 3 spirals, each a different size
- Try making a "storm" with fast diagonal lines
Artist Tip
Great artists like Picasso and Matisse could create incredible art using almost nothing but single continuous lines — called "contour drawings." Try drawing an animal or face without lifting your pen from the paper!
Try It Digitally!
Head to our Drawing Canvas and practice making different kinds of lines with the brush tool. Try the thin brush for delicate lines and the thick brush for bold strokes.
