Basic Shapes
🎒 What you need:
Every drawing is made of shapes!
If you look closely at any drawing — a face, a car, a tree — you will find that it is built from simple shapes. Learning to see and draw basic shapes is the key to being able to draw anything.
The Three Primary Shapes
In art, there are three shapes that everything is built from:
- ⭕ Circle — wheels, heads, eyes, the sun, bubbles, fruits
- ⬜ Square / Rectangle — buildings, screens, books, doors, tables
- 🔺 Triangle — mountains, rooftops, trees, arrows, teeth
Shapes in Real Life
Look around the room you are in. Can you find a circle? A rectangle? A triangle? Artists train their eyes to break complex objects into simpler shapes. A human face is roughly an oval. A house is a rectangle with a triangle on top. A tree is a circle on a stick.
✏️ Activity: Build a Robot from Shapes
Using only circles, squares, and triangles, draw a robot! Here is a starting guide:
- Big rectangle = body
- Small square = head
- Circles = eyes and buttons
- Rectangles = arms and legs
- Small triangles = antenna tips or teeth
Artist Tip
Picasso said: "Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist." Master drawing simple shapes first — then you can twist, combine, and play with them however you like!
Try It Digitally!
Open the Pixel Art Creator and try drawing a robot or animal using only squares — that's what pixel art is all about!
