Drawing from Shapes
🎒 What you need:
From shapes to creatures!
Now that you can draw lines and basic shapes, it's time to combine them into real things! This lesson shows you a simple technique that professional illustrators use every day: building drawings from basic shapes.
The Shape-First Method
The secret is to start with big shapes and then add details on top. Don't start with the eyes or the nose — start with the whole head as an oval. Then build everything else around it.
- 1. Sketch the biggest shape first (usually the body or head)
- 2. Add the next biggest shapes (legs, ears, arms)
- 3. Add small shapes for features (eyes, nose, buttons)
- 4. Connect and smooth the shapes with lines
- 5. Add details last (texture, patterns, expressions)
✏️ Activity: Draw a Bear in 5 Steps
Follow these steps to draw a simple bear:
- Step 1: Draw a large circle for the body
- Step 2: Add a slightly smaller circle on top for the head
- Step 3: Add two small semicircles on the top of the head for ears
- Step 4: Add four rectangle-ovals for legs
- Step 5: Add two dots for eyes, a small circle for nose, and a curved smile
✏️ Bonus: Try Your Own Animal
Now choose your favourite animal and try the shape method yourself. Think: what are the biggest shapes? Work from large to small.
Artist Tip
Keep your first sketch lines light — you can always darken them later. Use a soft pencil grip so you can erase easily. Most professional artists make many light sketch lines before committing to their final drawing.
Try It Digitally!
Open the Drawing Canvas and try drawing an animal using the shape method. Use a light colour for your guide shapes, then draw on top with a darker colour for the final lines!
