What Makes a Great Story?
Stories are everywhere!
Stories are as old as humanity. Every movie, book, game, comic strip, and bedtime tale follows the same hidden rules. Once you learn these rules, you will see them everywhere — and you will be able to create them too!
The Three-Act Structure
Almost every great story ever told follows the three-act structure:
- 🌅 Act 1 — The Beginning: Introduce your hero and their normal world. Something happens that changes everything (the "inciting incident").
- ⚡ Act 2 — The Middle: Your hero faces challenges, makes mistakes, and grows. This is the longest part — where the adventure happens!
- 🌟 Act 3 — The Ending: The big final challenge. Your hero uses everything they have learned to overcome it. The world is changed.
What Every Great Story Needs
Think about your favourite story. Does it have all of these?
- 👤 A character we care about — someone with wants, fears, and flaws
- 🎯 A goal — something the character desperately wants or needs
- 🚧 Obstacles — problems that stop the character from reaching their goal
- 🔄 Change — by the end, something is different (the character, the world, or both)
✏️ Activity: Story Diagnosis
Think of your favourite movie, book, or TV show. Write down (or just think about):
- Who is the main character?
- What do they want more than anything?
- What is stopping them?
- How do they change by the end?
- Where does Act 1 end and Act 2 begin?
Storytelling Tip
The best stories make us feel something. Don't just describe events — describe how your character FEELS about what is happening. The reader cares about feelings more than facts.
