Build a world your reader wants to live in!
Every great story takes place somewhere. Hogwarts. Middle-earth. Narnia. The world of your story is not just a backdrop — it is a character itself. The world shapes your heroes, creates the rules they live by, and makes the story feel real.
The Three Layers of a Story World
Building a believable world means thinking about three layers:
- 🗺️ Physical world — What does it look like? Climate, geography, buildings, nature
- 👥 Society — Who lives there? How do they treat each other? What are the rules?
- 🌟 Magic / Special rules — Is there magic, special technology, or unusual physics? What are the limits?
World Building Doesn't Mean Writing Everything Down
You don't need to know everything about your world before you start writing. Just know enough so your characters' choices feel believable. Build more world as you need it. J.R.R. Tolkien spent decades building Middle-earth — but you can start with just a neighbourhood, a school, or a forest!
✏️ Activity: Draw Your Story Map
Every great world has a map! Draw a simple map of the world your story takes place in. It can be as simple or as detailed as you like:
- Mark where your hero lives (home base)
- Mark where they need to GO (the goal / destination)
- Add one dangerous place they must pass through
- Add one friendly place where they can rest and get help
- Give key places names that feel right for your world
World Building Tip
The best fantasy worlds have RULES. Magic should have costs and limits. Societies should have history. Ask yourself: "What happened here 100 years ago?" Even if you never tell the reader — knowing the answer makes your world feel deep and real.
