Step-by-Step Instructions 📝
Prep your shirt and workspace
Soak your white t-shirt in water and wring it out so it's damp (not dripping). Cover your workspace with a plastic tablecloth. Put on rubber gloves — dye stains! Mix your dye colors according to the kit instructions in squeeze bottles.
Tip: Pre-wash the shirt without fabric softener first. This removes any coating that blocks dye absorption.
Create the spiral pattern
Lay the damp shirt flat. Pinch the center of the shirt and twist clockwise, keeping it flat as you turn. The shirt will form a flat disc shape like a cinnamon roll. Wrap 3-4 rubber bands across the disc to hold it in place, creating pie-like sections.
Tip: For a different look, try pinching off-center or on a sleeve for an asymmetric spiral!
Apply the dye
Squeeze different dye colors into each pie section — one color per section works best. Flip the disc over and apply matching colors to the back side. Really saturate the fabric; don't be shy with the dye! Cover every white spot.
Tip: Complementary colors next to each other (like blue and orange) may mix into brown. Stick to analogous colors (blue-purple-pink) for cleaner results.
Wrap and wait
Wrap your dyed shirt in plastic wrap or place in a sealed plastic bag. Put it somewhere warm and let it sit for 6-24 hours. The longer you wait, the more vibrant the colors will be. This is the hardest part — patience!
Tip: 24 hours gives the best, most vibrant results. Set a timer and try not to peek!
Rinse and reveal
Wearing gloves, remove the rubber bands and plastic wrap. Rinse the shirt under cold water until the water runs mostly clear. Then switch to warm water and keep rinsing. The first time you unfold it is the best moment — the spiral reveal!
Tip: Rinse outdoors with a hose if possible — less cleanup! Wash alone the first 2-3 times to prevent dye transfer.
Dry and wear with pride
Hang your shirt to dry or tumble dry on low. Iron it flat to see the full pattern. You've just made a unique piece of wearable art that no one else in the world has! Style it and show it off!
Tip: Take a photo of each tie-dye shirt you make and keep a pattern journal — you'll get better with every one!
