Design and build an epic marble run using cardboard tubes, boxes, and recycled materials! This STEAM project combines creativity with engineering as you construct ramps, tunnels, loops, and funnels to guide a marble on an exciting journey from top to bottom.

Step-by-Step Instructions 📝

1

Plan your marble route

Sketch a side-view plan of your marble run. The marble needs to travel from high to low, so plan your start point at the top and end point at the bottom. Design the path with straight ramps, curves, drops, and maybe a loop or funnel. Think about gravity!

Tip: The steeper the ramp, the faster the marble goes. Mix steep sections (fast) with gentle slopes (slow) for variety.

2

Build the support structure

Use a large cardboard box stood upright as your backboard, or tape your structure to a wall. Build shelf-like supports at different heights using cardboard strips. These will hold your ramps and tubes at the right angles.

Tip: Test the height of each level with a marble before securing. The marble should roll smoothly from one level to the next.

3

Create ramps and tunnels

Cut cardboard tubes in half lengthwise to make open ramps. Use full tubes for tunnels where the marble disappears and reappears. Fold cardboard into V-shaped channels for straight runs. Attach each piece at a slight downward angle so the marble keeps rolling.

Tip: Add guardrails (short walls on the sides of ramps) to prevent the marble from flying off at curves!

4

Add exciting features

Create a funnel from a cut plastic bottle for the marble to spiral down. Make a see-saw that tips when the marble reaches the end. Add a jump where the marble goes airborne briefly. Build a loop by bending thin cardboard into a circle (the marble needs speed for this!).

Tip: A funnel or spiral is the easiest "wow" feature to add. Cut the top off a plastic bottle and tape it in upside down.

5

Test and adjust

Drop a marble from the top and watch where it gets stuck, flies off, or slows down. Adjust angles, add walls, fix connections. Testing is the most important engineering step! Every problem is a puzzle to solve.

Tip: If the marble keeps getting stuck at one spot, make that section slightly steeper. A few millimeters can make all the difference.

6

Decorate and show off

Paint your marble run with fun colors, add flags and signs, create a "Start" banner and "Finish" zone with a cup to catch the marble. Name your creation and demonstrate it for family and friends. Time different marbles to see which is fastest!

Tip: Film a slow-motion video of the marble going through the entire run — it looks incredible and is great for sharing!
